Who Put Socks On The Porcupine?

The girl and I have a daily routine when I pick her up from pre-school. She tells me that she needs to show me everything that she did in school that day. I ask her to leave everything in her back pack until we get home. Once safely buckled into her car seat, she unpacks her back pack and hands me everything that is inside while I attempt to navigate the pick-up lanes, school speed zones, and general traffic, all under the watchful eye of Officer Friendly as he patrols the streets of our fair town.

Yesterday, I was treated to Mr. Snowman, the girl’s recent winter creation.

She handed me the accordion-legged Mr. Valentine while explaining that “his arm is broken” and telling me that “you need to fix him.”

The fact that she can hold a pencil and create that face is no small miracle. Captain Chaos’ teachers and therapists work very hard with her.

Then she handed me this...

A porcupine in socks?

Let’s see…

It’s winter, so they made a snow man. It’s February, so they made a Valentine’s Day decoration. But, a porcupine in socks? I thought it might be a ground hog, but ground hogs generally don’t wear spaghetti in their hair. I momentarily thought “Chinchilla,” but a quick Google search nixed that idea. So, I’m puzzled. Why did Captain Chaos' class make porcupines in February? Why did they put them in socks?

The girl isn’t telling.

Your guess is as good as mine.

Maybe it's a Hedgehog?? You know like in the Jan Brett book- The Hat....the hedgehog puts a girl's sock on his head for a hat....

That's my first thought at least....

It does look like a hedge hog. I think Sadie is on the right animal.

Perhaps the sock is for safe handling? I know the last time I picked up a porcupine...

Oh wait. Never did that.

I'd go with hedgehog. And if there's a book as Sadie says...Yeah. Sounds good to me!

Hedgehog is the name of the animal I couldn't think of last night. And if you flip it upside down, the Hedgehog is wearing the sock as a hat. Sounds like we might have found the answer.

Of course, you could always just ask one of the people in the pickup line today. :)

I have no idea. Red regularly comes home with odd attempts at creativity. I just smile.

She did VERY well on that snowman!

BTW - my 12 yr old always tries to show me things when I'm driving. Apparently our kids think that we can multi task while driving.

Kudos to alert reader Sadie for correctly identifying the sock wearing hedgehog from Jan Brett's "The Hat." I asked the Captain's preschool teacher today. The mystery is solved.

Glad the answer was found.

I couldn't remember which book it was like Sadie did, but I was also going to go with hedgehog. And did you know hedgehogs sometimes hibernate? Perhaps this one is attempting to hibernate in the sock. Very cute work from the Captain!

It is a very good book. I recommend the set, and some extra socks for what might follow, especially give the width and breadth of the animal companions in your house.
