The Larson Affect

The General was sitting at the kitchen table, quietly working on a grammar assignment, when he started laughing for no apparent reason. When I inquired about the source of his amusement, he read the following sentence out loud:

The famous words of General MacArthur when he left the Philippines were, “I shall return.”

He followed that sentence with, “So that’s what Gary Larson meant!”

Apparently, Gary Larson has become the measuring stick by which we measure the depth of my son’s memory and the breadth of his common knowledge. It’s a bit frightening, really.

I’m just glad he’s learning something.
